Road Transport Department of Karnataka

Road transport Department started in 1957 and entrusted with the work of tax collections and registrations of the vehicle, issuing of permits, driver's and conductor's licenses etc in Karnataka. This Department Controls all vehicles and road limits and rules and regulation on road transport. There were 25,976 registered vehicles in Karnataka, But in the year of 2003 gone up to 4,461,105 including all vehicles such as a two wheelers, Motor Cars, Jeeps, Cabs, goods vehicles, Omni Buses, Autorikshaws, K.S.R.T.C. Buses, Private Buses, Tractors, Trailers, Contract Carriers. As per the Central Govt. Motor Vehicle Act of 1989, to check air pollution, Transport Department has made Smoke Emission Control Test compulsory in the State since 1993 and there were 218 Smoke Emission Checking Centres in the State, of which 115 are in Bangalore. But now these all increased almost of the Petrol bunks are serving Smoke Emission.

Road Transport Department also started Accident relief fund for the Autorikshaw Drivers. Two wheeler Compulsary Helmet wearing rules in the cities, Bangalore following this rules strictly. Since January 1998, the government has restricted issuing Auto permits in Bangalore city, thereafter all over Karnataka following this limits on permits for Autorikshaw. Taxi also handling by the Road Transportation Department with some of the rules and regulation, limits. In the recent year, there is restriction on altering vehicles, safe belt, weight limit in the trucks, passanger capacity of vehicles, transferring registration to another people and there are so many kinds of rules coming every year depending on the situation.
