Tourist Sights in Sravanabelagola, Hassan

Sravanabelagola is the important Jaina centre with great History. This place is situated in Hassan District of Karnataka State, 157 km from Bangalore city. There are two stony hills and pond, called Indragiri and Chandragiri. Chandragupta basadi of the Gangas in Chandragiri hill, and Parshwanatha basadi is the biggest in Chandragiri hills.Gommata monolith stands 58 feet from the base which is installed by the Ganga General Chavundaraya in the year of 982 A.D. There are many basadi in sravanabelagola, they are Siddhara basadi, Odegal basadi, Chennanna basadi, Chauwisa basadi, Aregal basadi and Shantinatha basadi.

There are over 800 inscriptions in Sravanabelegola, Maha Masthakabhisheka festival is held once in 12 years. Gommata is the main attraction, it’s stand 58 feet from the base. Inscriptions dating from various points during from 600 to 1830 CE, most of them found the chandragiri and rest can be seen in the Indragiri stone hill. The Inscriptions includes text in the Sanskrit, Kannada, Tamil, Marathi, Marwani and Mahajani Languages. Most of the Inscriptions mention the story and growth of the dynasties of Gangas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagar and Mysore Wodeyars.

How to reach
The nearest city is Hassan, this place only 157 km from Bangalore through Mysore district. Nelamangala (one of the towns in Hassan District) is just 27 km from sravanabelagola. Mysore and Mangalore is also near to this place. Nearest railway station is Hassan.
