Rail Transport in Karnataka

The first Railway line in Karnataka started from Bangalore to Medras in 1864. Central Government maintained all railway systems in India. There is Special Budget for railway maintenance. As of now All District have Railway lines passing through their jurisdictions. Coorg is not having railway line, because of it’s too hard to get line to coorg and it’s too expensive on Government view. The railways are planning to implement the long standing demand for Mysore-Madikeri rail line. Many of the projects and Plan are in pending. There were more than 400 railway stations in the state. There are many gauges, some of them are Metre gauge, Broad gauge. Gauge conversion to high gauges is under progress on many railway lines. Government trying to convert high gauge line to every railway lines in Karnataka. Dakshina Kannada had only 12.87 km railway track before 1956.

The Total railway line length was 3270km. of which Broad gauge is 2706 and Metre gauge 564. Alomost of long Distance railway lines are converted to Electric engine trains which is low expensive. Railway is one of the cheapest and fastest transportation in the World, so peoples depending on trains.

Transportation of raw Materials, Industrial Materials, Oil, Petroleum Products, Petroleum gas and many goods are transporting through Trains to many major places. Many major companies are depending on trains for large transportation. It is also great use in ports in Coastal to transport which is dispatched from cargo ships.

List of Railway System in Karnataka

  • Konkan Railway: Total length of 738km with 56 railway stations. It runs Mangalore to Mumbai through Goa.
  • Shimoga-Talaguppa railway: It runs through Shimoga to Talaguppa with 12 stations. Passenger and Goods trains running through this line.
  • South Western Railway: Hubli is the Head Quarters, some of the main trains operating through this division, they are Karnataka Express, Rani Chennamma Express, the Lalbagh Express, the Udyan Express, Shatabdi Express.
  • The Golden Chariot: This is the luxury tourist train operating by the Indian Railways and Karnataka State Tourism DevelopmentCorporation. This train runs through Bangalore, Kabini, Mysore, Hassan, Hospet, Badami and Goa. Facilities like Restaurent, bar, Gym, Spa, Wi-Fi Connection, live television Service.
