About Badami Fort

Badami Fort is located adjacent to the popular rock cave temples at Badami. The prime attractions of the fort include large granaries and an underground chamber, which are located inside the premises of this fort. Situated on the top of the hill, the fort houses Malegitti Shiva, an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is further segregated into upper and lower Shivalayas.

Dotted with sculpted tales from mythology on its outer walls, the Upper Shivalaya was constructed by Pulakesan II, a devotee of Lord Vishnu. The steps of the temple are adorned with images of lion and elephant heads. In addition, the lower Shivalaya is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The temple has a Dravidian tower, which is believed to be built around 14th century. Surmounted on a hill top, the temple is constructed by using stones and is finely joined without mortar.

Situated in close vicinity of the fort is Agasthya Tirtha, a lake, which is believed to have healing powers. Some of the ancient rock-cut temples are also located on the banks of a well-built tank. Tourists can hire private taxis and auto-rickshaws to reach the site.
